How long has Runner’s Edge been around?
Runner’s Edge of the Rockies began in June of 2003 with 32 members. The group has grown ever since with 300+ members training for full & half marathons, ultras, triathlons, relays, etc. For more information about our coaches, click here.
Who should join?
Endurance athletes or those people who are aspiring to become one! Over 1,000 people of all ages, ability and experience have gone through our training program. We are social, supportive and many members have completed their first full or half marathon, set PRs in everything from 5Ks to Ultras, qualified for Boston, competed in relays and Ironmans, even won races, changed their lives, and made fantastic friendships along the way!
Can I still join if I don’t want to do a full or half marathon?
Yes – While we do encourage members to have a specific race or goal in mind to help focus their training, we welcome all runners and walkers. Once you run with the group a few times, you might even catch the marathon bug!
Do you support walkers?
100%, YES! As our namesake implies, we are a distance running program. However, we do have a dedicated walking group, and also support members utilizing the “run-walk” method. Our walking members typically train for half marathon events.
What races do you train for?
You pick the race and we’ll get you there! Our members do everything from local events, to Boston and other national races, to triathlons and 100-mile ultras. Whatever your race, our coaches will customize a training plan to help you reach your goal.
What days of the week does the group meet, and what time are the workouts?
We hold long runs every Saturday AM throughout the year, beginning just after sunrise, from 6:30am to 8:00am depending on the time of year. We start our runs early (and on time) so that you can have optimal training conditions and then get on with the rest of your weekend. We also offer a 30-minute “early start” option for busy members who need to start their runs a bit earlier. Our speed workouts are held TuesdayAM (5:30am) & PM (6:00p-6:30pm), and we also do trail runs on Thursday PM (6:00-6:30pm) and Sunday AM as schedule & weather permits.
Where do you meet and run? How far are the workouts?
We run everywhere! We have over 150 training routes throughout the Denver Metro area, so that your training is varied to help prepare you for any race course you’re targeting. We run on a variety of terrain and surfaces to maximize your preparation and reduce the risk of injury. We’ve been scouting, mapping and marking routes for over 13 years and have some of the best locations to run in the Denver area… and we’re always adding more! Our Saturday routes are set up for you to run between 2 and 24 miles depending on the training phase and what is on your customized race plan, and we provide aid stations with water and Gatorade every 2 miles. Our Tuesday speed workouts are approximately 90 minutes long, and trail run distances will vary. As a member, you’ll receive the workout calendar and complete details and maps for each run.
I am visiting Denver. Can I run with your group?
Definitely! Come join us – your first Saturday AM group run is complimentary! RSVP at least 24 hrs in advance to reserve your spot.
Do you offer any sort of discount on the dues?
Yes – After you have signed up for a training session as a new member, you can take advantage of our alumni member discount for future sessions. We also offer a deeper discount with our annual membership, open during the first three months of the year.
Unfortunately, I just don’t have the time to become a full member but would like to run with the group when I can. Is this an option?
We offer an a la carte “drop-in” option for Saturday runs, but please note that it does not include the rest of the membership perks. We have factored into the dues that the average member will miss workouts due to work, travel, family activity, racing, etc., so If you think you’ll make 50% of the workouts and want to maximize your training experience, then the full membership is a better option.
Do you refund or credit membership dues if I can‘t start the training session on schedule or if I can’t finish the training session?
We understand that situations can change for our members after the session has started, but unfortunately we do not refund membership dues.
Do you run year-round?
You bet! We run year-round with the exception of weeks between each of our Training Sessions. Our programs are broken into seasonal “Training Sessions” which follow the primary marathon seasons and allow people to take a break when they need to, or run year-round with the group if they want. The sessions are as follows: Spring: January – May (Prorated Mid-Spring start in April), Summer/Fall: June – October (Prorated Mid-Summer start in August), Winter: November – January
Do I have to make every group run?
No – While consistency is important in training, we understand that everyone has various commitments and may not be able to make every workout. So when you do have to miss a group run, you will still be able to stay on track with your mileage by following your customized daily training schedule.
If I miss the kickoff run can I still join the session?
Absolutely – we have people joining every week. While we encourage everyone to sign up early to get started on their training, we accept new members at any time during the year. We also offer one complimentary group run for prospective members who would like to experience a group workout first before signing up.
Can I run with my dog or baby jogger on the group runs?
Well-behaved, four-legged friends on leash are allowed at group workouts, along with running strollers. However, be prepared as our routes cover a variety of terrain including hills, steps and trails (and sometimes snow!) that may not be conducive to a stroller.
What are the pace groups and how do I determine which group to run with?
We have members of all ages, speeds and experience who run with us: Sub 3-hour to 5+ hour marathoners. Our multiple pace groups are broken out by full & half marathon goal time, and led by experienced members to ensure that you are training at the correct pace, and have other members to run with. For example, if your goal finishing time for the marathon is 4:00, then you would run with our 4:00 pace group, assuming this goal is reasonable. The coaches will consult with you regarding the appropriate pace group to run with, given your previous experience in races and fitness level. A majority of our Saturday runs will be done at an average pace of one minute per mile slower than race pace, with the exception of some planned “progression” runs where we will gradually increase to goal pace in the second half.
I’m hoping to get faster. Can I start with one pace group and then move up?
Nothing makes us happier as coaches than to see our members improve, so yes, you can certainly switch pace groups. Conversely, if you are recovering from an injury or illness, or feeling that a pace group is too fast for you then you are welcome to move back a group. The bottom line is that you consistently train at a pace that is safe and appropriate for your current fitness level and goals. Our pace groups are non-competitive, and experience has shown that members training with the correct pace group are more likely to accomplish their race goals.
There are other running groups in Denver - Why should I join this one?
Runner’s Edge of the Rockies will provide you with all of the organization and support that you need within a group setting to achieve your distance running goals. This includes detailed route maps for each Saturday run, fully-stocked aid stations with water and Gatorade, a variety of routes in and around Denver, multiple pace groups to fit your ability, personal coaching, and camaraderie with friendly members of all abilities. Many other running groups are focused on training members for a specific race. As a member of Runner’s Edge of the Rockies, you enjoy the benefit of choosing whatever race you want as your goal, and we’ll provide the detailed plan to get you there. We have a very welcoming and supportive atmosphere – Runner’s World Magazine named us “Denver’s Home Town Help” in their July 2005 article on America’s top-25 running cities, and we’ve also been voted Best Running Club in Colorado, in Competitor Magazine.
Do any running stores and races offer discounts to group members?
Yes! Most specialty run stores in the Denver-metro area provide a discount for our members, and on days when we run from they’ll often offer additional promotions for us. We also receive additional VIP discounts and perks with races and wellness partners, allowing members to save more money.
What do I receive once I become a member?
You will immediately be added to the member roster so you can start receiving group E-mails and have access to our Members Only section. There you can see which races other members are training for, hit the forum & message boards to connect with other members for midweek runs and carpooling to workouts, get pacing charts, read our online training manual, get race discount codes, etc. You will also receive: customized daily training schedule specific for your race or training goal, team training gear, member discounts with our select partners and wellness network (massage therapists, PTs, acupuncture therapist, nutritionist), all of the weekly group workouts, coaching support and feedback for all of your questions throughout the session, clinics, social events, and a bunch of supportive new running friends!
Will I receive advice on nutrition, stretching, injury prevention...
Yes – Every member will receive access to our online training manual with over 250 pages of fantastic information on nutrition, stretching, injury prevention, strength and cross-training, mental and motivational tips, pacing strategies, HR monitor tips, and much more. We also provide training tips and various guest speakers before the start of each group run and other special clinics to make sure you’re receiving the most current training knowledge.
Do you have social events for members?
Definitely – In addition to grabbing breakfast with your teammates after every Saturday run, we also do an annual celebration party, and get togethers during the year for BBQs, happy hours, several fun-runs including our annual “Pancake Breakfast Run”, “Holiday Lights Run”, and various other events!
