Mental Coaching with Justin Ross, Psy.D. Licensed Clinical Psychologist.
In order to optimize your running, you eat well, you do your strength training, you foam roll (occasionally, at least), and you commit to a dedicated training program. But you may be neglecting the complex organ that lives in your head a.k.a your brain.
Thinking happens to play a starring role in how the rest of your organs and muscles function, how and when you decide to push the pace, and when you tell yourself you are not able to tolerate any more and slow down. In order to thrive in endurance sports, you need to address the most neglected part of your training regime; your mental skills.
Sports psychology is the process of learning how to channel thoughts, deal with anxieties, set appropriate goals, manage your internal dialogue, and shift your focus in tolerating discomfort. When you do that, you can execute your training and perform at your optimal level!
