Kim Smith
Member of Runner's Edge since:
Spring 2004
Occupation:
Certified Public Accountant (I work part time for a commercial interior co. Pear Commercial Interiors)
Hometown:
Born in Rochester, NY; Raised in Houston, TX
Why I run:
to keep my hyper activity deficit disorder in check...it helps keep my sanity while dealing with my kids, husband, work, etc.
Hobbies (other than running):
working in the yard (or garden as some folks call it) and sewing (I used to own an interior decorating business)
Favorite place to run:
Boulder County so my dog Shadow can run with me. I also enjoy the urban trails that we do with Runners Edge
Favorite race:
Boston (it was such an uplifting experience for me...especially since I worked many years and ran 11 marathons to get there). Second favorite is Tucson (I loved the downhill course.)
Favorite shoe:
Asics Nimbus and flip flops of course!
Most embarrassing running moment:
One time I was on a group run (5 of us) in Houston, when we got to Rice Stadium for some water one of the girls pointed to my underarms (in front of the others) and asked if I was letting my hair grow out there. Needless, to say I had forgotten to shave the night before and was totally oblivious that it looked that bad. I am still embarrassed about that to this day!
Favorite post-run indulgence:
Soaking in a HOT bath to warm up since I am usually cold after a race. For food I enjoy eating a bowl of chili with beer. If chili is not available, Mexican food and margarita's (with salt) are my other favorites.
Where I keep my medals:
In a dresser drawer in my bedroom. I would like to eventually make a shadow box with them and hang them on the wall in my office.
If I could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, it would be:
Jesus would be my first choice because I have tons of questions and I figured that would be the most interesting conversation ever. My second choice would be George Clooney so I could take him on a trail and seduce him to my hearts content.
My biggest fan(s):
I guess my biggest fan would be my family. They have never really made a big deal out of it because my kids can't figure out why I don't come in first place :-) I just hope that they learn by my example how important exercise is in each of our lives. Maybe someday they will understand the tremendous accomplishment of marathon running. My husband has always been supportive; however, over the last year he seems to understand a little more the hard work involved in running a marathon.
Favorite Runner's Edge Moment:
My favorite moment with Runner's Edge is always at the end of each run. It is so nice to hear David and Julie ask, "How was your run?" and to talk about the run with all the other members. I really appreciate the support each of our members give one another. I have been in other running groups (in Houston) where the members where so competitive with one another. They would ask you how you did just to see if they did better! I am so thankful to have found such a wonderful and supportive group here in Colorado with Runner's Edge!
I bet you didn't know:
I am a preacher's daughter. I grew up in a very strict Pentecostal home where I was not allowed to where pants, jewelry, or make-up. I was a very quiet and reserved girl throughout school. I never really had the opportunity to play any sports and did not discover running until my late 20's. As a result, I lack in coordination skills and have to work very hard at any sport I try to do.
