Runner's Edge of the Rockies

Michael Klee

Member of Runner's Edge since:
November 2006

Occupation:
Bulk Products Manager, Vitamin Cottage Natural Grocer at Mission Trace, and retired Book Dept. Manager for 20 years at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center Bookstore

Hometown:
Indianapolis

Why I run:
I like to say I'm running away from old age. But really, I want to stay fit and healthy into my later years. I love to be outdoors and will run in almost any weather. I love the challenge of running longer distances. And running is a boost to my self-esteem when I can keep up with others half my age.

Hobbies (other than running):
reading current affairs periodicals, new thought inspirational books, and doing some photography and drawing too, growing tomatoes in the back yard and would like to get back into hiking in the mountains.

Favorite place to run:
Hayden Park on Green Mountain (where I live)

Favorite race:
Bolder Boulder 2006, my very first race of any kind.

Favorite shoe:
my first pair were Vasque trail runners. They fit like a glove and were the only running shoes I owned, and as I didn't know any better, I wore them on streets and in the Bolder Boulder as well as trails, which may account for some of my minor foot injuries. Now, I wear the Brooks Adrenalin 7, having worn out the version 6, and also wear the Brooks Adrenalin Trail Runners.

Most embarrassing running moment:
Turkey Trot 2006: Began the race right at the starting line and was swept up in the speed of all the "elite" runners, running far too fast on my toes, and burning out my lungs.

Favorite post-run indulgence:
I think I deserve a big bowl of chocolate ice cream.

Where I keep my medals:
I keep my only medal from the Denver Half Marathon 2006 hanging on the stone wall above our fireplace

If I could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, it would be:
My son & daughter, who are immersed in studies at DU. My Dad, and my two brothers, John and Bob, all deceased, none of whom were runners, but how neat it would have been to share this passion together. Also, my only living brother, Joe, who would rather be kayaking. And finally, the late Joseph Campbell, famous mythology scholar, who by the way, was a track star at Columbia in the 20's.

Favorite Runner's Edge Moment:
All the moments have been good. I've gained so much from all the kind and encouraging people in this group and hope I can pass on these good vibes to others too.

My biggest fan(s):
My two children, Sajal and Joy, and also my friend, Liz, who was the first to warn me about the hazards of overtraining. Coach David confirmed and reinforced the warning, thank you, David!

I bet you didn't know:
I'm a graduate of the NOLS course (National Outdoor Leadership School) in the summer of 1970 in the Wind River Range near Lander, Wyoming. Also, I'm widowed, having enjoyed almost 22 years of being married to Judy Wagner Klee, a wonderful and dynamic woman, who passed away in April of 2005.
