Al Hawker
Member of Runner's Edge since:
Since before it was Runner's Edge - I am one of the pre-historic members - or as David calls us, one of the Guinea pigs.
Occupation:
Systems Test Manager for the State
Hometown:
Born in Delta, CO - grew up in Englewood - live in Centennial. I just never found a place that fit better.
Why I run:
It feels really good to finish any run - especially the long ones. Plus I got tired of buying pants with a larger waist every time I shopped.
Hobbies (other than running):
Camping and backpacking
Favorite place to run:
Washington Park, when it is busy with people, and the lake shore in Chicago.
Favorite race:
Highline Canal 10K
Favorite shoe:
New Balance 76x. They keep changing and I keep buying.
Most embarrassing running moment:
While watching the Boulder Backroads I joined and ran next to Michelle Apicella near the end and told her to be careful because her shoe was untied. About ten seconds later I stepped on it and almost tripped her.
Favorite post-run indulgence:
For long runs - Eggo waffles with too much real butter and maple syrup. I just ran 20 miles. I will eat what I want. Then I lie down in front of the TV for a couple hours.
Where I keep my medals:
On a necktie rack in the workout and running shrine area of my house.
If I could go on a run with anyone, dead or alive, it would be:
Maybe Jim Ryan. If I was running with him that would mean I was really fast.
My biggest fan(s):
My daughter, Alexis, her husband Darryck, and my son Mat. They have encouraged me to run marathons in Europe, Canada, and around the US, have always found me at several places on the course, and cheered me at the end regardless of my finish time.
Favorite Runner's Edge Moment:
Pacing at the Colfax Marathon. We should all do at least a half marathon where we KNOW we are going to finish in the targeted time.
I bet you didn't know:
I won first place in bare back bronco riding at age 14 in a junior rodeo. And a long time ago - when I weighed less than 135 pounds, I won the mile event at a track meet with a time of 5 minutes and 10 seconds. Behold my greatness!
