Distance runners or those people who are aspiring to become one! Runner's Edge of the Rockies is a group training program for people of all ages, speeds and experience. We are social, supportive and through our training program, many members have completed their first full or half marathon, set PR's, qualified for Boston, completed ultras, relays, tris, changed their lives, and made fantastic friendships along the way!

There are other running groups in Denver - Why should I join this one?
Runner's Edge of the Rockies will provide you with all of the organization and support that you need within a group setting to achieve your distance running goals. (Anything more and you would need a personal trainer!) And we're not the only one's who agree, as Runner's World Magazine named us as "Denver's Home Town Help" in their July 2005 article on America's Top-25 Running Cities. You can also check out more news on the group or read some quotes from members. Or better yet, come out for a complimentary run to see for yourself what the buzz is about!

Who are the coaches?
David and Julie Manthey ("D&J") - We are the organizers and coaches of Runner's Edge of the Rockies. We are accomplished distance runners who have been running all our lives and while not elite runners, we have been involved in athletics since an early age competing at both the high school and collegiate levels. Coaching runners comes naturally to David who grew up with a father who is a competitive runner, and he has also coached H.S. Soccer teams and Junior Golf programs. Prior to starting Runner's Edge of the Rockies, Julie trained with over half a dozen running groups, so she knows what works. She uses her organization and consulting skills to ensure each training session runs smoothly for the group.

Do you coach walkers?
As our namesake implies, we are a distance running program. However, we do have a dedicated walking coach to support our walking group. Our walking members typically set their goals on participating in half marathon events.
What full and half marathons do you train for?
The question is, which race would you like to run? You pick the race and we'll get you there! We train members for all of the popular races including Colfax, Denver, Boulder, Kansas City, Chicago, Marine Corps, NYC, Phoenix, Houston, Disney, Ft. Collins, San Diego, Steamboat, Pikes Peak, relays, ultras, tris, etc. Or, if you have another race in mind we will customize a program to help you reach your goals.
Can I still join if I don't want to do a full or half marathon?
Yes - While we do encourage members to have a specific race or goal in mind to help focus their training, we welcome all runners and walkers. Once you run with the group a few times, you might even catch the marathon bug!
What days of the week does the group run?
We run every Saturday morning throughout the year. During the Spring and Summer/Fall sessions, we also offer our Tuesday moring & evening Speed Workouts which are designed to make you a stronger and faster distance runner.
Where do you meet and run?
Everywhere! We have over 50 amazing marked and mapped training routes throughout the Denver Metro area so that your long training runs are interesting and do not become monotonous. We also run on a variety of terrain and surfaces to maximize your training and get you fully prepared for your race. We've been scouting, mapping and marking routes for years and have some of the best locations to run in the Denver area... And we're always adding more!
Are you the group with the yellow signs?
Yes, that's us! You may have seen our yellow route markers, chalk arrows and aid stations out in your neighborhood on Saturday mornings, or even some of our friendly runners cruising by!
What time do the runs start?
Typically, our runs begin just after sunrise. (From 6:30am to 8:00am depending on the time of year.) We start our runs early (and on time) so that you can have optimal training conditions and get on with the rest of your weekend. We also offer a 30-minute "early start" option during the Spring and Summer/Fall Training Sessions for those members who need to start their runs a bit earlier.
How far do you run each week?
Anywhere from 2 to 24 miles - One of the great benefits of Runner's Edge of the Rockies is that you can train for whatever race you want. Because of this, everyone may be running varying distances each week depending on his or her specific training schedule that we prepare. In order for members to run together and also get in the miles they need, we set up the majority of our group runs as "out/back" routes. These routes also allow the group to take advantage of aid stations every 2 miles and train specifically for negative splits.
Do you run year-round?
You bet! We run year-round with the exception of the weekends between each of our Training Sessions, (so D&J can have a weekend off). Our program is broken into seasonal "Training Sessions" which follow the primary marathon seasons and allow people to take a break when they need to, or run year-round with the group if they want. The programs are as follows:
Spring: January - May
Spring Base-Building: April & May
Summer/Fall: June - October
Winter: November - January
What do I receive once I become a member?
Everything you need! You will immediately be added to the member roster so you can start receiving group E-mails and have access to our Members Only section. There you can see which races other members are training for, connect with other members for midweek runs, get pacing charts, etc. You will also receive a customized daily training schedule specific for your race or training goal, a Runner's Edge of the Rockies training binder, team training gear, member discounts with our sponsor stores and running network (massage therapists, PTs, acupuncture therapist, nutritionist), all of the weekly Saturday training runs (complete with detailed maps, mile markers, and aid stations every 2 miles), clinics, social events, and full coaching support for all of your questions throughout the session.
Will I receive advice on nutrition, stretching, injury prevention, etc?
Yes - Every member will receive a training binder with over 130 pages of fantastic information on nutrition, stretching, injury prevention, strength and cross-training, mental and motivational tips, pacing strategies, HR monitor tips, and much more! We also provide training tips and various guest speakers before the start of each group run and other special clincs to make sure you're receiving the most current training knowledge.
Do I have to make every group run?
No - While consistency is important in training, we understand that everyone has various commitments and may not be able to make each week's run. (And we factor that into the member dues.) So when you do have to miss a group run, you will still be able to stay on track with your mileage by following your customized daily training schedule or checking in with us.
Do you have social events for members?
Definitely - In addition to grabbing breakfast with your teammates after every Saturday run, we also do a celebration party at the end of each Training Session, and get together during the year for BBQ's, happy hours, several fun-runs including our annual "Holiday Lights Run", and various other events!
How do I sign up?
To sign up for a Training Session, go to our Registration Page. There, you can register online with a credit card or download and print the registration/waiver form for the current training session. You can bring your completed form and check to one of the Saturday group runs, or also mail it to us at:
Runner's Edge of the Rockies
2707 Florence Street
Denver, CO 80238
Do you offer any sort of discount on the dues?
Yes - After you have signed up as a New Member and run with the group for a Training Session, you will be considered an "Alumni Member" and can take advantage of our Alumni Member discount for future sessions. We also offer Early Bird registration discounts for each Spring and Summer/Fall Training Session and a Full-Package discount for members adding both Speed workouts and personal online coaching to their regular membership dues.
If I miss the first run, can I still join?
Absolutely - We have people joining every week. While we encourage everyone to sign up early to get started on their training, we accept new members at any time during the year. We also offer one complimentary group run for prospective members who would like to experience a group workout first before signing up.
Unfortunately I just don't have time to become a full member but would like to run with the group when I can. Is this an option?
We do offer a pay-per-run "A la Carte" training option for individual training runs. Each run is $15 for non-members, and $10 for alumni members to cover the route setup, aid stations and anything else we are offering that day.
Can I run with my dog or baby jogger on the group runs?
Unfortunately, no - While we love dogs and kids (and have both!), we do not allow them out on the group runs for safety reasons. (Sorry!)
Will everyone be faster than me?
No - We have members of all ages, speeds and running experience who run with us. Our multiple pace groups will ensure that you are training at the correct pace, and have other members to run with.
Should I wait until I am in better shape to train with the group?
Not at all! Since our program is designed for runners of all abilities, you can build up your miles with the group. (Remember that even elite runners had to start somewhere!) We do recommend that new members can run/walk a minimum of 2 miles.
I am visiting Denver. Can I run with your group?
Definitely - You can always find out the location and time under "This Week's Run" on our website, and each run is $15 to cover the route setup and aid stations. Please e-mail us beforehand at colomarathoners@earthlink.net to let us know you will be visiting so we can ensure enough aid station fluids for everyone and also welcome you to group!
